Couples Therapy

If you are considering couples therapy, chances are that you and your partner may have many feelings about the process. Feelings can range from hope that the experience will make things better to fear it will make things worse. These are understandable concerns. It takes courage to open the door to this profoundly important exploration.

In order to fully understand the dynamics of your relationship, I focus on each of you as an individual and on the relationship as its own entity. In a safe environment, we will understand how your history, your patterns of communication and personality styles may be inhibiting your efforts to resolve conflict and to communicate constructively.

A thoughtful exploration of your family backgrounds will illuminate ways in which these early relational models are impacting your current relationship. Attention will be paid to strengthening the bond between you by building a more engaged and attuned relationship.

Couples often feel that they are mired in hopeless repetitive patterns of communication. These patterns are an expression of each individual’s unique psychobiology, having arisen from life’s many traumas, big and small. Linking trauma to triggering behaviors creates a spaciousness that promotes deepened understanding and loving interpersonal relating.

I would be happy to speak with you about any questions you may have.
